Vom Baukasten aufs eigene Hosting — was der Umzug wirklich gekostet hat

I moved 340 posts from a hosted platform to a static site on my own domain. Here is the honest accounting, because most migration stories skip the boring parts.

What it cost: two weekends. Roughly four hours of actual migration and eleven hours of fixing what the export did to my formatting — footnotes, code blocks, and every single image caption.

What worked immediately: the domain (it was already mine, which is the entire trick), the feed, and the build.

What I underestimated: old URLs. Every incoming link, every bookmark, every search result pointed at the old address scheme. Redirects are not optional and they are not a nice-to-have — they are the migration.

Would I do it again: yes, and earlier. But the one thing I would do differently is this: own the domain from day one, no matter which platform you write on. Everything else is replaceable, that is not.

    Und dazu passend: die alten Adressen im Blick behalten, statt einmal umzuleiten und die Sache zu vergessen. Ich schaue einmal im Quartal in die Fehlerseiten des Servers, das findet mehr als jedes Werkzeug.

    Die Weiterleitungen sind wirklich der Kern. Bei meinem zweiten Umzug hatte ich sie vergessen und drei Monate später fünfzehn Prozent weniger Leser — nicht wegen des Umzugs, wegen der toten Links.

    Elf Stunden für die Formatierung schreckt mich ehrlich gesagt ab. Waren das eher Bildunterschriften oder war es der Fliesstext?

      Dann ist es bei mir vermutlich schlimmer, ich habe unter jedem Bild drei Zeilen. Gut zu wissen, bevor ich anfange.

      Captions and footnotes, almost entirely. Plain text survives any export — it is the small structured bits that break.
